Ewan Blaine Vance is the son of the American politician, author, and venture capitalist James David Vance, also known as JD Vance. James David Vance was born on August 2, 1984 in Middletown, Ohio, United States to Donald Bowman and Bev Vance. James joined the American Marine Corps and participated in the Iraq War as a combat correspondent with the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing. Despite having grown up in a moderate and ardent section of Protestantism, JD converted fully to Catholicism in August of 2019. He continued by saying that he wasn’t really participating in any one strict category. Vance went on to explain how Roman Catholic theology shaped his political beliefs and claimed that he became a Catholic because he grew convinced through years that “Catholicism was true”.
The year he converted, James Vance published an essay outlining the reasoning behind his conversion to Roman Catholicism in The Lamp’s debut issue, which has subsequently been referred to as “a Catholic equivalent of The New Yorker.
