Harry Ellsworth Sykes was born in 1934 in Virginia, USA to Luther and Maggie. Harry grew up and joined the US Army, not much is known about him. Whereas, his daughter Wanda Sykes became successful owing to her profession of standup comedy. She started her career by performing in local venues while working in NSA, once she achieved success locally she moved to New York to achieve greater heights. One of her early appearances was in 1990 on Russell Simmons’ Def Comedy Jam.
At Caroline’s Comedy Club, she got her first big break by opening for Chris Rock. Sykes made history by becoming the first openly LGBT person and the first African American woman to perform at the annual White House Correspondents’ Association dinner in May 2009.
From 1991-1998, Wanda was married to Dave Hall, Record Producer. However, in 2008 she came out publicly as a lesbian and then in the same year she married a French woman, Alex Niedbalski. They have a daughter and son, named Olivia and Lucas. Her sexuality came as a shock to Wanda Parents, especially to Harry Ellsworth when she told them at the age of 40. The parents did not attend Wanda’s wedding to Alex but later they accepted her.
