Holmes was born David Goldstein on 24 February 1947 in Northwich, Cheshire, England. He possesses dual British and American citizenship. He is the son of Leonard Eliot Goldstein, a U.S. Army warrant officer and bandleader, and Gwendolen Mary, of English ancestry. When Holmes was six, his family moved to Nanuet, New York, where he grew up and attended Nyack High School. He was a clarinet major at the Manhattan School of Music.

Holmes has a brother named Richard, the principal lyric baritone of the New York Gilbert and Sullivan Players. Richard also sings roles with regional opera companies, including Virginia Opera, Glimmerglass, and Lake George.

Holmes wears many hats: he is a songwriter and recording artist, playwright, television writer, and novelist. He jumbles across the different jobs seamlessly, and each has won him massive recognition. His first single hit in his 20s was “Jennifer Tomkins,” which he released under the studio name Street People. The song hit the Billboard Hot 100 and remained there for 15 weeks, peaking at #36. His follow-up single Thank You Girl made it to the Billboard pop charts in April 1970.

Holmes played the piano for the Cuff Links and the Buoys. He wrote jingles and pop tunes for artists like Dolly Parton, the Platters, Gene Pitney, and the Drifters. As a recording artist, Holmes’ debut album was Widescreen, released in 1974 on Epic Records.

Holmes created the TV series Remember WENN in 1996 for American Movie Classics. His novels include Where the Truth Lies (2003), Swing (2005), and The McMasters Guide to Homicide: Murder Your Employer (scheduled for release in 2023).
