South of England: where to visit

South of England

With so much to do in the South of England, it’s no surprise that it’s now one of the UK’s most visited regions for holidaygoers. If you’re thinking about taking a trip to somewhere in the South of England for a weekend excursion, or even a longer seven-day holiday, here are some of our favourite places to visit.

Table of Contents

Bath

Known for the historic Roman baths, the city of Bath is one of those places you could spend all weekend wandering around without ever getting bored. See where some of the iconic Bridgerton was filmed, attend a live show at one of Bath’s beautiful theatre venues, or even sample some of the many pubs and bars hidden between cobbled streets.

If you do want to see what all the Roman fuss was about, try out the city’s Thermae Bath Spa: a twenty-first-century take on the original mineral-rich Roman springs.

Dover

Perhaps one of the most unique destinations in the South of England, Dover is more than just its iconic white cliffs. In fact, it’s every medieval history buff’s dream. Visit Dover’s medieval castle and search for the extensive secret wartime tunnels – before taking a few long walks along the many bays and beaches!

The best part about this coastal town? Dover is super easy to get to with trains from Canterbury to Dover, so you can visit even if you don’t have a car!

Oxford

Every young academic’s dream, Oxford is a quaint university town full of picturesque architecture, great arts and theatre, and a vibrant nightlife. Visitors can spend the weekend exploring the many Oxford university colleges, without having to sit a single entry exam!

You can also complete a trip in true Oxford style by cruising down the river in a punt, just like they used to do back in the 1880s…

Cotswolds

For holidaygoers looking to escape from busy city life in the countryside, The Cotswolds has it all. Picture-perfect villages, rolling green hills, and so many great English pubs, make your way around all the different little villages and discover just why the Cotswolds is officially an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

For the ultimate Instagram holiday photo, don’t forget to check out Bibury, one of the most photographed villages in the whole of England!

If you’re thinking about your next family holiday, or even considering a weekend trip away with friends, the South of England has everything you need… and more!
