Get Your Roof Ready for Winter

Get Your Roof Ready for Winter

Your roof is one of the most essential components of your home. Not only does it insulate and keep your house warm, but also saves you money on energy bills.

It’s wise to do some maintenance on your roof in the fall in order to protect it for winter. Doing so can protect your home from damage and reduce the likelihood that you need to pay for a roof replacement later on.

Emergency Roof Repair

The roof is your first line of defense against nature’s elements, shielding your home from rain, wind, cold and pests alike. So when your roof begins to leak or deteriorate, act quickly to repair it so you can enjoy peace of mind again.

In case of an emergency, it’s wise to hire a professional with the necessary skill and equipment for repairs on your roof. Not only will they solve the immediate issue, but they may also offer suggestions on how to prevent further harm from occurring.

Emergency roof repair typically includes services to stabilize structural damage, seal off leaks, and install temporary roofing solutions. These could include an emergency tarp or shrink wrap for temporary protection while you wait for your roof to be repaired or replaced.

Siding Installation and Repair

Siding is an integral part of your home’s exterior. Not only does it express your style, but also protects it from elements. Furthermore, siding can be highly energy-efficient – saving you money on heating and cooling expenses.

However, like anything exposed to the elements, siding can deteriorate over time. This is especially true of wood siding which is particularly vulnerable to moisture damage.

Wood rot is a common issue with this type of siding and requires extensive repair work that involves replacing all damaged shingles or boards.

If you discover any damage to your siding, don’t delay in calling a professional. Doing the repairs correctly the first time can save you money in the long run. Professional siding installation and repair companies have the experience and expertise to tackle any job. They can also provide advice on which types of siding are best suited for your home.

Clean Your Gutters

When it comes to keeping your roof free from rot and leaks, gutters are one of the most critical components. They prevent rainwater from flowing over your roof and damaging its foundation.

Cleaning your gutters at least twice a year is recommended to keep them free of debris. This includes leaves, pine straw and other particles that could clog gutters and downspouts.

In cold climates, this material can freeze and create ice dams that prevent water from draining away from your home. Prevent these problems by cleaning your gutters prior to winter.

By eliminating ice dams, you will reduce the potential damage from flooding around your foundation. To safely clear away blockages and debris, have a hose with either a jet sweeper or high-pressure nozzle ready for use.

Trim Overhanging Branches

Branches hanging over your roof can cause structural damage and other issues, as well as provide a pathway for wildlife such as raccoons.

If you notice limbs hanging over your roof, it is important to trim them as soon as possible. Not only do these pose a danger to yourself and anyone nearby, but they may even pose an injury risk.

To safely cut a tree limb hanging over your roof, you’ll need a ladder and rope. Before beginning the task, inspect the branch to make sure it is healthy and undamaged.

You should cut away limbs in manageable sections, about a foot at a time. The goal is to get the limb as close to its trunk without damaging it. To do this, make a notch cut on the underside of the branch and a relief cut two or three inches beyond it; this helps prevent splitting of the bark while you’re cutting.
